When a boot is made utilizing a stitchdown construction the upper leather and textile is pulled down around the anatomical last, flared out and cemented to the midsole, then stitched to the outsole. The result is a recraftable boot that has a 360-degree stitch for added durability and comfort. The flare-out allows the foot to rest evenly and comfortably on the sole and creates extra air space to breathe. In other constructions, the leather is sometimes wrapped under the foot, forcing it to rest on the edge of the leather and reducing air space. The flare-out also increases flexibility because it does not bend against itself when walking, like it does in a wrapped under construction.
Inside a stitchdown boot we’ve added a free-hanging bootie, made utilizing either a GORE-TEX or Danner Dry waterproof membrane or a specialized non-waterproof liner. The inner bootie cushions the foot and molds the leather of the outer boot to the ankle, arch and instep for support and a customized fit.
